Math Tutor for the Blind & Visually Impaired
Would you like the opportunity to make a direct, positive impact on individuals with vision impairments by helping them achieve their goal of earning a high school equivalency diploma? For some, only one subject stands in the way between them and the diploma: mathematics!
The Catholic Guild for the Blind is in need of one or more Math Tutors to help adult learners who are blind or visually impaired to pass the math section of the New York State high school equivalency exam (TASC), which is significantly more rigorous than the GED® exam that it replaced in 2014. Tutoring is needed to supplement the students’ regular classroom instruction. Tutors will be oriented to working with students who are visually impaired and will have access to instructional tools such as tactile graphs and geometric shapes to teach those who are blind, as well as print materials for those with partial sight. Each tutoring session will be for one hour and will consist of one or two students. Tutors will be able to consult with the math instructor on an ongoing basis as needed and will report on the progress of each student to the academic supervisor by email each week.
Skills needed:
• Strong math skills and ability to teach up through 12th grade level math
• Familiarity with TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) and/or NYS Common Core State Standards in math preferred
• Patience, flexibility, creativity, positive attitude
• Ability to teach additional subjects—science, reading, writing, social studies—beneficial
• Experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired beneficial
Commitment:
• 2-4 hours per week on site, flexible scheduling during hours of operation, 9 to 5
• 3-6 months, longer preferred
Age Minimum (with Adult): 18+, Minimum Age:18+
