International Center: ESOL Group Facilitators

We are seeking volunteers for community-based Group Facilitator roles to support adults in ESOL programming. Volunteers facilitate conversation and/or activities for small groups of English learners, helping them improve their communication skills, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Through meaningful activities on relevant topics, volunteers partner with learners to build confidence in conversational English and support their adjustment to life in New York. For many learners, our programs are a first step toward achieving their English goals, and can build a bridge to further education, job training, or citizenship opportunities. Volunteer training and ongoing support are provided.

Available opportunities for ESOL Group Facilitators:

  • Mixed-level groups for parents at P.S. 1 (Lower Manhattan)—Tuesdays, 9–11am
  • Mixed-level groups for residents at Grand Street Guild (Lower East Side)—Tuesdays, 1–2pm
  • Mixed-level groups for residents at Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center (Upper West Side)—Wednesdays, 1–2pm
  • ESOL program for guardians at Terra Firma (Bronx)—Wednesdays, 6–8pm
  • Intermediate ESOL groups at Mid-Manhattan Adult Learning Center (Central Harlem)—Thursdays, 6:30–8pm
  • Intermediate ESOL groups at Mercy Center (South Bronx)—Fridays, 9am–12pm

  • Demonstrate native English fluency and strong communication skills
  • Demonstrate an interest in and sensitivity to other cultures
