Guild for the Blind: ESOL Instructor (Midtown East)

Help us teach English to the visually impaired!

The Catholic Guild for the Blind provides a variety of essential services to individuals who are blind and visually impaired, including immigrants who need to learn English in order to get a job or to pursue higher education.

Our academic services include

  • ESOL instruction
  • Preparation for the high school equivalency (TASC) exam
  • Preparation for college
Schedule 
  • Tuesdays
    • ​Any of these time periods 11:30 am-1:00 pm & 2:00pm-3:30pm
  • ​Wednesday
    • ​​Any of these time periods 9:30am-11am and 11am-12:30pm
  • ​Fridays
    • ​Any of these time periods ​9:30am-11am and 11am-12:30pm
Commitment
  • Once a week 
  • About 3 months 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (or soon to be completed BA) in TESOL, English education or related field
  • Some prior teaching experience
  • Ability to develop and implement lesson plans and keep records
  • A heart for working with individuals with disabilities
  • Prior experience in working with visually impaired individuals is not required

What you will do

  • Teach a small class (1-4 students) – English conversation and literacy. 
  • Create and implement lessons 
  • Prepare materials in accessible formats – large print, audio, Braille
  • Maintain student attendance and progress records
  • Submit documents, including volunteer hours, to academic supervisor as requested

*Orientation to working with visually impaired individuals, instruction in preparing accessible materials (large print, audio, Braille), and guidance in lesson planning will be provided, as well as ongoing support as needed.
