AmeriCorps VISTA -Curriculum Development Manager New York

Catholic Charities' ESOL program, the International Center, provides English language classes to newly arrived immigrants, refugees, and asylees. Our students represent a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds from approximately 80 different countries. We offer the majority of our programming, over 35 classes per week, at our main center in lower Manhattan. We also offer off-site programming in several high needs neighborhoods throughout Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island so that adult English learners can access the services they need to become active and engaged members of their communities. To further this goal, the AmeriCorps VISTA member will be responsible for developing curricula, and instructional materials for on-site and off-site ESOL programming focused on communication skills, job readiness skills, academic readiness, and civic and community engagement.
Responsibilities:
  • Conduct a program assessment to gain an understanding of the current classes and community programs and the needs of students in each.
  • Conduct outreach to volunteers and community program partners to learn about and address the educational needs of New Americans.
  • Create curriculum outlines and materials and collect resources for adult students with multiple proficiency levels and varied educational backgrounds; collect and organize existing materials and resources that are already in use.
  • Create tools, such as presentations and webinars, and conduct orientations for volunteers on how to use the curriculum and materials.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment and evaluation of curriculum and materials to ensure alignment with student goals and pedagogic best practices.
  • Participate in trainings and workshops related to ESOL/Adult Education and immigrant education best practices.
  • Promote and communicate about student and program success internally and externally.
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment and orientations for community programs.
Skill Requirements:
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Able to work independently and balance multiple projects and deadlines
  • Flexible, patient, compassionate, and interested in working with immigrant populations and/or adult ESOL students
  • Excellent research skills High School degree or GED equivalence mandatory, college or pursuing degree preferred
  • Must be a US Citizen, US National, or Permanent Resident
  • Must be able to undergo and clear a background check
