HSE Social Studies and Science Instructor

The Catholic Guild for the Blind is offering a unique opportunity for a seasoned HSE instructor to prepare adults who are blind and visually impaired for the NYS High School Equivalency (TASC) exam, specifically in the disciplines of Social Studies and Science.  One instructor to teach both subjects is preferred, but the possibility of two separate instructors, one for each subject area, will be considered.  Class sizes are small, typically 2-4 students.  Ages may range from 18-55+.  The degree and nature of visual impairment varies; thus, different formats--large print, audio, Braille--are used.  Orientation to working with adults who are visually impaired will be provided.

Skills needed:
  • Experience teaching, reading and writing skills across the disciplines of Social Studies and Science (9th-12th grade levels)
  • Familiarity with the TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) exam
  • Ability to create and implement effective standard-based, student-centered lesson plans
  • Experience working with visually impaired individuals beneficial
  • Patience, flexibility, creativity, positive attitude
Education:
  • Master's degree in education or related field preferred
  • Bachelor's degree with relevant experience will be considered
Commitment:
  • 2-4 hours per week (2 hours per week for each subject area, Social Studies and Sciences)--preferably the volunteer will come in twice a week, depending on students' and instructor's availability
  • 6+ months, longer preferred
