Merriam Playground: Park Clean Up

Join us as volunteers descend and refurbish this 6 acre multi-use park, complete with multiple climbing structures, basketball and handball courts.

Volunteers will complete lawn restoration, litter removal, and repainting of the handball courts.

In another park a block away, managed by Catholic Charities’ Alianza MOSIAC, volunteers will do some trash removal, put up chicken wire around the garden and help build a shed.
*This project is not suitable for those under the age of eleven.

Fun Facts: This playground is bounded by University Avenue, Merriam Avenue, W. 168th Street, and Ogden Avenue. University Avenue and the nearby University Woods are named for New York University. In 1892, the university’s undergraduate college moved from Greenwich Village in Manhattan to the quiet rural community here, called Fordham Heights (and subsequently renamed University Heights). In 1973, the entire site was sold to the city, and today the campus is home to the Bronx Community College, a part of the City University of New York.
