2026 Martin Luther King Day Opportunities

Join us this Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a meaningful day of service. Catholic Charities is proud to partner with four community nonprofits UJA, JCC, Met Council, and Knock Knock Give a Sock to honor Dr. King’s legacy through action.

Together, we are offering multiple volunteer opportunities across New York City, including a family friendly option for volunteers with children in Harlem with JCC. Please review the opportunities below and sign up for the project that best fits your interests and availability.

All volunteer registrations must be submitted by January 16th. We look forward to serving alongside you.

Family Service + Action at JCC Harlem
MLK Community-Wide Day of Service

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Participate in family friendly service projects in honor of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Assemble care kits to be distributed to neighbors in need
  • Support neighborhood clean up and beautification efforts
  • Work alongside JCC Harlem staff and community partners to serve the local community

Qualifications and Skills:

  • All volunteers should dress comfortably and be prepared for light physical activity
  • Be willing to work as part of a team with volunteers of all ages
  • Have a positive attitude and a desire to serve the community together
  • Family friendly opportunity and appropriate for volunteers with children

MLK Meet Your Neighbor Lunch with Knock Knock Give a Sock
 

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Support a community dinner bringing together neighbors from local shelters and residents from the surrounding community
  • Help welcome and host guests for a shared meal served side by side
  • Assist with light setup, hospitality, and clean up
  • Engage in respectful conversation and help foster a warm, inclusive environment in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Qualifications and Skills:

  • This opportunity is recommended for volunteers ages 18 and up
  • Be open to meeting and engaging with neighbors experiencing homelessness
  • Have a friendly, respectful, and compassionate presence
  • Be comfortable interacting in a community dining setting

MLK Day of Service Food Packing with Met Council


As a volunteer, you will:

  • Package food and non food essentials for New Yorkers in need in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Support Met Council programs serving low income seniors, families, and college students
  • Rotate through several hands on tasks in a fast paced, team oriented environment
  • Work alongside fellow volunteers to make a direct and immediate impact

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Be comfortable standing and performing light physical tasks
  • Able to work collaboratively as part of a volunteer team
  • Bring a positive attitude and willingness to help wherever needed
  • Appropriate for adult volunteers and older teens 16+
